This coastal shrub was my discovery when visiting St. Simon's Island with my family around age 13. We all fell for the bright colors and shiny green foliage of this plant but we didn't know what it was -- so we called it "the St. Simon's shrub." I took home a few cuttings in a cup of water and managed to keep them alive. For the next several years we continued to not know the real name of this plant but as I grew more interested in plants I discovered the name Oleander.
This plant has survived around 15 years in my parents yard (zone 7b)although this plant does much better in zones 8b - 11. This shrub loves full sun but be careful as it is very poisonous if consumed.
