The baldcypress is a beautiful, stately deciduous conifer. I took this photo just north of Charleston, SC in a swamp at Cypress Gardens. The tree has a pyramidal habit with a buttressed base. The foliage is soft and fine in texture. This tree is very adaptable to wet or dry soil conditions. In wet areas the tree will develop interesting "knees" that pop up near the base and around the root system but they do not occur in dryer soils.
