Sumac is a small native plant growing 10-15 feet high. It is often seen in colonies or in mass as it tends to sucker and spread easily. The foliage is medium to dark green in the summer but the fall color is amazing. I often notice it on roadsides in the fall when the foliage turns yellow, orange, red, or purple. The scarlet fruit persists into the winter and is of interest to me.
This is a great plant for naturalizing or massing - also good in waste areas and banks. It tolerates drought with no problem but does not thrive in wet areas.
