Rhododendron catawbiense - Catawba Rhododendron 'Nova Zembla'

This is a hot fuschia-red variety of Rhododendron that was in full bloom when I was visiting a nursery last week so I had to take a picture. I've never grown a lot of rhododendrons so I don't have a lot of personal experience but my parents have a beautiful purple one that does pretty well in part sun. These slow growing shrubs need good drainage and aeration for the roots. The bold, dark green foliage is a great texture to add to the garden and is best viewed in mass. 'Nova Zembla' is cold tolerant & heat resistant to our area.
