Ficus carica - Fig tree

Fig trees add a wonderful coarse texture to the garden. These small trees/bushes grow 10-15' tall and the fruit reaches 2-4 inches long. Fig prefers a moist, well drained soil and does best in good sun. Usually grown as a bush this plant also looks great limbed up as a small tree. I am growing the variety 'Celeste' - another popular variety is 'Brown Turkey'.

3 months ago reports stated that figs were discovered 8 miles north of ancient Jericho -- dating back 11,400 years. This would make figs the oldest domesticated crop.
