Polypodium polypodioides - Resurrection Fern

This small creeping fern is an air plant (epiphyte). It typically grows on trees and receives its nutrients from the air and any nutrients present on the bark of a tree. It is not harmful to a tree. The name is suiting because without sufficient rain the fronds will curl up and the plant will appear dead but usually just a little moisture and it will open back up (or resurrect). It has an amazing endurance to live and it has been estimated that it can survive years without water and still open back up when given water. It grows in the Southeast to Texas and is found as far north as New York.
