This is one of my favorite native trees. The woods behind my parents house are full of poplar trees and I have 3 in the backyard now. These trees grow straight up and there aren't any limbs down low so you could never really climb this tree. The bark is a light gray color and the flowers are greenish-yellow with an orange design at the base. The flowers are similar to tulip blooms and the tree is often called tuliptree as well. The fruit are samaras that fall from the trees in autumn and they look like little brown wings. They were a fun little toy for me when I was younger. These trees also have really nice yellow fall color.
These trees get really tall so they are best planted to large open areas where they can be fully enjoyed.
