Amelanchier arborea - Serviceberry tree

This serviceberry tree is a true native to our area. This one had already peaked when I took this picture last weekend in Alabama. Serviceberry trees usually grow 15-25' which is a great size for smaller lots. The berries on the tree are edible but be sure to harvest before the birds get to them. Dr. Dirr claims that the berries are better than highbush blueberries so I'll have to test that someday. The fruit is usually ripe in June.
