This is my favorite winter tree. I love the copper foliage that it holds onto all winter long and when I'm driving it always catches my eye when there is a thicket of beech trees in the woods. These native trees are slow growing but strong. The silvery bark is a beautiful contrast to the winter foliage. The beech tree grows best in sun but tolerates shade very well.
The wood is very hard and because of this it was often left alone by the lumber industry until chainsaws became common. The wood is great for flooring & furniture.
